Navigating the discomfort


Emotions are instinctual. We don’t get to choose what we feel. We can rarely talk ourselves out of feeling guilt or disappointment. Relief or excitement. Fear or grief. 

Emotional health is the power to accept the good and the bad, the joyful and the chaotic. It’s our ability to slow down and notice how we feel.

Just imagine you’re walking down the street and you hear a gunshot. Your body goes into fight/flight/freeze mode. Before you’re seen anything — before your brain's registered who pulled the trigger — your body has an immediate reaction, in your chest or your shoulder or your legs or your hands. 

You may turn and find it’s a car backfiring. Now you can rationalise the sound, yet you still feel a kind of buzzing in your bones.

Reaslising we aren’t actually in any danger… we’ll likely brush it off and carry on with our day. Yet our body continues to harbour the feeling of shock.

In the animal kingdom, it’s a different story. 

…A gazelle has just survived a 90 minute high-speed chase, pursued by a cheetah. Having out-galloped the predator, now realising its out of harm’s way, it’ll go into a quiet space and shake. Literally shake its entire body to expel the adrenaline, to release the stress. So it can move on and focus on its life, unencumbered by the trauma it experienced just moments ago.

Aether was born from the discontent of our founder, Nix Brook. It was only through a rejection of the constraints that society tried to leash her down by, that she became aware of her potential.
